The Best Places to Visit in Somalia

Somalia - The Horn of Africa. A country on the east coast of the continent known for its strong cultural pride, extensive coastline and muslim population. With a population of ~20 million people, the country is currently divided. The northern region of Somalia has declared indepence in 1991, and is beginning to gain some international recognition. It has its own governing body and currency. Somalia still considers Somaliland to be apart of the country, causing a divide. Most visits to Somalia are done with tour companies. 1) Mogadishu

Mogadishu is the capital of Somalia and the largest city, with a population of ~3 million people. It appears to be a growing city, in terms of its economy and general improvements in the city. With city advancements, there is potential for tourist numbers in Mogadishu to increase over the years. Mogadishu lies on the south coast and was historically an important trading hub.

Things to do:
If you are in Mogadishu, go to Lido beach. It overlooks the Somali Sea and is a popular beach. It’s name dates back to the Italian colonization of Somalia. It has an authentic vibe to it with very little tourists. Mogadishu also has local markets dotted about, as well as very old mosques. You really should just walk around and experience life in the city, and make sure to pass through the Old City.

Aden Adde International Airport (MGQ) handles flights from various countries internationally, such as Turkey and Ethiopia.

2) Hargeisa (Somaliland)

Somaliland, which is declared as its own country, is found in the Northern part of the horn of Somalia. Its population is ~5 million people and its capital is called ‘Hargeisa.’ There is said to be a strong sense of local community and tradition in Somaliland. While its still unsafe for tourists, you cant really get much more of an eye opening experience than seeing how locals live in a dangerous, unrecognized country with no international backing.

Things to do:
The key place to be is Hargeisa, the capital, where you’ll find markets, chaos and the Hargeisa War Memorial, honoring those who died in the Somalia Civil War. About 15km North-East of Hargeisa are the Laas Geel rock formations. The paintings and rock art is estimated to be ~5,000 years old, meaning it is incredibly well preserved for us to see today.
