The Best Places to Visit in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone, often called Salone, is a beautiful West African country known for its stunning coastline, lush rainforests, and rich cultural history surrounding the freedom of slaves. With a population of around 8 million the official language is English (Creole Dialects are also spoken). It’s got many lovely beaches and islands you can visit, and as of recent years is seeing a significant tourism boom from interested travelers. It is truly one of West Africa’s best destinations.

1) Freetown

Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, is a vibrant city on the Atlantic coast with a rich history and lively culture. Founded in the late 18th century as a settlement for freed African slaves, you’ll find the cities urban liveliness and chaos mixed with the surrounding hills and rainforest. It’s the main starting point and homebase for visiting Sierra Leone.

Things to do:
The most iconic and powerful landmark in Freetown is the Cotton Tree. The massive tree in the city serves as a crediting symbol of freedom for freed slaves. Besides that, the main market in the city is Big Market, which you can take your time wandering through and shopping around in. Nearby (30 min) is Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, where rescued chimpanzees are cared for.

How to get there:
Lungi International Airport (FNA) is Freetown and Sierra Leone’s main airport. Flights come in mainly from some European and African cities.

2) Banana islands

The Banana Islands, located just off the coast of Freetown, are a set of stunning secluded islands known for their white sandy beaches and clear turquoise waters. They’re a perfect destination for untouched relaxation in Sierra Leone.

Things to do:
Once you’re there, enjoy all the serene beaches and indulge in some swimming or snorkeling. You may find some trails through the forested areas of the islands.

How to get there:
To get here, you must take a boat from a departure point of Freetown. They leave from Aberdeen or Lumley Beach area.

3) Bunce island

Bunce Island is a small but historically significant island located in the Sierra Leone River, not far from Freetown. It was once a major hub in the transatlantic slave trade, and today its ruins stand as a powerful reminder of that period. History fans will find it to be a great educational experience when learning about the importance of this island, and seeing it firsthand.

Things to do:
The main purpose of trips to the island is to explore the historic ruins which were structures used during the transatlantic slave trading period. You’ll find huge ruins of fortresses and warehouses, and the purpose of your visit should be education and rememberance.

Most take a private boat tour from Freetown, which is recommended as they give you information and a tour.
