The Best Places to Visit in San Marino

San Marino is one of Europe’s smallest countries, and is completely surrounded by Italy. Without a car, you can only access it from the popular beach town of Rimini on Italy’s eastern coast, so most travelers never make it here. The population is only around 34,000 people, and almost everyone lives in the historic center or the nine small castelli (castles/villages) that make up the republic. The vibe is quiet and medieval, and outside the capital there really isn’t anything to see, so we will just focus on that.

When to visit:
April to September

1) San Marino

San Marino’s capital is also called San Marino, and it is by no means a big city. Only 7,000 people live here, and the city itself is just the historic core plus a few modern bits spilling down the slopes. Everything is built from gray stone, with narrow cobblestone streets, arches, small squares, and defensive towers.

Things to do:
By far the biggest highlight of the city is the Three Towers. They are a set of historic castles which anyone who actually comes to San Marino has to visit. They are all located on the 3 peaks of Monte Titano, the main mountain near the city. The first tower is called The Guiata, and it’s the oldest and most famous. The second tower is called The Cesta, which is the highest tower of the bunch. Finally, the third tower is called The Montale. You can’t visit this one, and it’s on the smallest of the summits making it more of a lookout tower. there is also some nice places in the actual city, such as Piazza della Libertà which is the main square featuring the government building. There is also the Basilica di San Marino, as well as tourist shops and stuff like that along all the historic streets.

How to get there:
Take a bus from Rimini straight to San Marino.
